Both show you Dubai from the water, but they are very different experiences. A side by side look at dhow cruises and private yacht charters.
Visitors who want to see Dubai from the water usually end up choosing between two options: a seat on a traditional dhow or a private yacht. Both are worth doing. Which one is right depends on what you want from the evening.
What a dhow cruise is
A dhow is a traditional wooden boat, the kind that carried goods around the Gulf for generations. Today many are fitted out as floating restaurants. You buy a ticket, share the boat with other guests and cruise slowly along Dubai Creek or the Marina while a buffet dinner is served, often with live entertainment.
What a yacht charter is
With a charter you rent the whole yacht with its captain and crew. There are no other passengers. You choose the start time, the route, the music and the food, and the boat goes at your pace.
The main differences
- Privacy: a dhow is shared, a yacht is yours alone
- Price: a dhow is charged per person, a yacht per hour for the whole boat
- Route: a dhow follows a fixed loop, a yacht can head out to open water, Ain Dubai or the Palm
- Timing: dhows leave at set times, a yacht leaves when you booked it
- Atmosphere: a dhow is about heritage and dinner, a yacht is about space and freedom
- Activities: swimming and watersports are possible from a yacht, not from a dhow
When a dhow makes more sense
Choose a dhow if you are one or two people, want an easy evening with dinner included, and are curious about the traditional side of the city. It is good value and needs no planning.
When a yacht makes more sense
Choose a yacht for a group, a celebration or any time you want privacy. Split between ten friends, the hourly price often feels closer to a ticket than people expect, and you get the whole boat to yourselves.
Our yachts start from AED 578 per hour for the whole group. Compare the fleet to see which size fits yours.
